Bernedoodle (Bernese / Poodle Hybrid)

A Bernedoodle is a crossbreed (hybrid) dog created by crossing the Bernese Mountain Dog and a Standard or Miniature Poodle.

History

The first known intended cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle occurred at Swiss Ridge Kennels, a dog breeding company located in Canada, in 2003. Although not as well known as designer cross-breeds like Labradoodles and Cockapoos, Bernedoodles are bred at several locations and are growing in popularity. Legitimate breed associations such as the AKC, the UKC, and the CKC, do not recognize the Bernedoodle, or any other designer cross, as a breed.

Appearance and temperament

Like most other hybrid or 'designer' dogs, Bernedoodles do not have consistent traits. While many Bernedoodles display desired traits, their appearance and behavioral characteristics remain, from an overall breed standpoint, unpredictable. As such, Bernedoodles' hair can be anywhere from wiry to soft, and may be wavy or curly. Many Bernedoodles do shed, although the coat usually sheds less than that of a Bernese Mountain Dog. While Bernedoodles vary greatly in size, they are almost universally black or predominately so, often with some brown or white, similar to the markings of the Bernese Mountain Dog. Like Poodles, Bernedoodles may be energetic, intelligent and trainable; and like Bernese Mountain Dogs they may be patient, good with families and fond of cold weather.

Health

They are not prone to allergies; but can have minor ear problems. Bernedoodles have an average litter size of 6-10 puppies. They have a remarkably high life expectancy of 10-12 years.
